What Could Have Been || AU Prompt

Klaire grabbed her books from her locker, stuffing them in her bag. If she didn’t hurry she would be late for work, it was only a small job in the local bookshop but it was money in the bank, a great little college fund and on the odd occasion it helped her mum pay the bills. “Klaire! Wait up!” A voice shouted behind her.

“I can’t” She replied trying to close her locker, shut her bag and turn around all at the same time. “I’m late for work.”

“I’ll give you a lift, come on.” Klaire didn’t need to look up to know the owner of the voice but she did anyway.

“Thanks Vi.” Klaire said smiling as she finally managed to close her bag. “Let’s go.”

They both powered walked to Violet’s car, Violet and Klaire had been friends since the beginning of high school both quickly fitting in with the ‘popular’ crowds. Although Violet had been with that crowd for most of her scholastic years whereas Klaire had to wait for puberty before she was deemed worthy. It seemed cruel, and really it was rather but Klaire had made great friends (and some less great ones but hey) over the years, even if previously school had been… less kind.

“How was biology?” Klaire asked knowing it was her friend’s favourite subject, and last of the day.

“Ugh, bad so bad. First we had a sub who couldn’t have told you the difference between a plant and animal if he tried. Then he tried to explain how lactic acid was produced for no apparent reason, he was so wrong it hurt. Then to top it off Karen and Nicole were bitching the whole time about Piper.” Violet said in huff frustrated.

“Sorry I asked” Klaire said with a grin as they drove through the city. “Why were Karen and Nicole bitching then?”

“Oh because you know Piper is such a stirrer, and you know she slept with Aaron the other day. What the hell? How dare she?” Violet said sarcastically.

“The usual then. At least after college we probably won’t see them again.”

“College? College is a couple of summers away.”

“We still need to prepare for it, just in case.”

“No way, there is no just in case, I’m going to go to UCB or MIT as a biology major and you Klaire-bear, are going to join me as a history major.”

Klaire smiled at her best friend as the car began to park.

“Thanks for the lift, Vi. See you tomorrow.”

The friends hugged “See ya later, Klaire-bear.” Klaire hopped out of the car and bounded into work, just on time.
